Eligibility

Any current student, faculty or staff member of a Columbia University program located on the Health Sciences campus, or any physician or staff member of Columbia University Medical Center may request items not owned by Columbia University or any of the Borrow Direct institutions through the Health Sciences Library Interlibrary Loan Office.

Students, faculty and staff enrolled in or employed by programs located on the Morningside Campus should request interlibrary loan service from a library on that campus.

Staff of the New York State Psychiatric Institute should request interlibrary loan service from the NYSPI Library at (212) 543-5673.

Consult the Health Sciences Library complete access policies for more information.

Making a Request

If you have found a citation in PubMed or WorldCat:

The eLink icon (what's elink?) that you normally use to get the full text of an article provides easy access to the ILL form.

  1. Navigate to your article (or book) record.
  2. Click on the eLink icon.
  3. Select the 'Interlibrary Loan' link from the lower portion of the screen.
  4. Enter your UNI and password as prompted.
  5. Choose your Columbia campus affiliation (i.e. Medical Center Campus). This step may not appear if you have already selected your campus affiliation earlier in your browser session.
  6. Enter your UNI and password as prompted a second time.
  7. Confirm that the pre-populated fields are correct and click 'Submit Request'.
  8. When finished logoff from the blue left-hand menu and close your browser window.

You may be prompted to enter your UNI and password twice to use ILLiad.

If you cannot find a citation in a database like PubMed or WorldCat:

After confirming via CLIO that Columbia University does not subscribe to the journal or own a copy of the title you are interested in, you can submit an ILL request by going directly to the interlibrary loan borrowing system, ILLiad, and filling in the citation fields manually.

  1. Click on Log in to ILLiad
  2. Enter your UNI and password as prompted.
  3. Choose your Columbia campus affiliation (i.e. Medical Center Campus). This step may not appear if you have already selected your campus affiliation earlier in your browser session.
  4. Enter your UNI and password as prompted a second time.
  5. Under 'New Request' in the blue left-hand menu choose the type of request you would like to make.
  6. Fill in as many fields of the form as possible.
  7. Click 'Submit Request'.
  8. When finished logoff from the blue left-hand menu and close your browser window.

You may be prompted to enter your UNI and password twice to use ILLiad.

If you need an article immediately:

In this case, submit a Rush ILL request by calling the Interlibrary Loan Office directly at (212) 305-4082. Rush articles are received in 24 hours and carry an $11.00 per article fee.

Receiving requests

Articles are usually available within 2-3 days of the request. You will receive an email when the article is available for viewing on ILLiad. If you have been notified that your article is available log in to ILLiad and select 'Electronically Received Articles' from the left hand blue navigation.

Log in to ILLiad

Books and audiovisual items will typically be available in a week (or more) for pickup at the Circulation Desk. If you need an item immediately place a rush request as described above.

Loans periods, renewals, and returning materials

The typical loan period for books is four weeks.  Audio visual and other items may have different loan periods. The due date is listed on the slip that comes in the item.

Renewals must be requested at the Interlibrary Loan Office at least 5 days before the due date.

All borrowed items must be returned to either the Interlibrary Loan Office or the Health Sciences Library Circulation Desk.

Items returned late are subject to overdue fines and subject to temporary suspension of borrowing privileges as well as jeopardizing our ability to borrow from other libraries.

Costs

Interlibrary loan service is provided free of charge to CUMC students, faculty and staff.

Borrowing Limits

The interlibrary loan service is subject to US Copyright law. Requests to copy articles that are more than 50 pages in length may be denied. Most libraries do not lend journals; borrowing an entire issue or volume is unlikely.

There are no restrictions on the number of items that may be requested, however, if a large number of requests are submitted simultaneously they may be processed in batches.
