Here are a few tips for locating articles or books that may help you before you submit your inquiry.
Inquiries that require an examination of choices, skills needed, and use of multiple sources to address a set of tasks as part of a larger project.
For consulting inquiries, the Library staff will assess all requests. Future actions will depend on the nature and complexity of the problem and/or underlying project. If an appointment is needed, we will contact you within two (2) business days to schedule it based on availability.
Inquiries that warrant a succinct, tailored answer.
Library staff will provide information and recommendations with a focus on the key aspects of your question. Our goal is to get you started.
Here are some examples of what focused inquiries may result in:
Inquiries about step-by-step instructions for information-related tasks.
Before submitting your inquiry, we suggest exploring the following resources for tutorials:
Inquiries about technical or access failure issues using information tools, such as the library catalog, CLIO, or a journal database. Here are tips that may help you before submitting your inquiry:
When on-campus and connecting via a wireless device, you must use the Mercury secure wireless signal. The open guest-net signal will not connect you to full-text resources.
When off-campus, you will need to authenticate with an active UNI and password to access library resources. Offsite access privileges are restricted to current Columbia University faculty, staff, and students.
Some technical issues are related to the internet browser you are using. Microsoft Edge has known issues connecting to library resources, such as Ovid. Use a different browser (e.g., Chrome or Firefox) instead. If you receive a blank page or a “bad header” message, try clearing your cache and cookies.
If you are attempting to access Lexicomp, Micromedex, or UpToDate, you will need to use the CUIMC VPN connection.
Questions about the Endnote program, including installation errors, can be addressed to Endnote Technical Support by phone at 1-800-336-4474 or via their support page.
