Rules and Regulations

Because the materials housed here are of a rare or unique nature, we ask you to follow the regulations below. Only in this way can our holdings be preserved for the use of future generations.

General Rules

  • Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in all areas.
  • Registration with photo identification required for all first-time patrons.
  • Inspection upon departure may be required.
  • Materials may only be photocopied by a staff member. Personal copiers and scanners are not permitted. Digital photography permitted without flash/stands.
  • We reserves the right to refuse photocopying if it might damage the material, overburden staff or violate U.S. Copyright Law.
  • Permission to publish or reproduce materials in Archives & Special Collections must be applied for separately.

Use of Materials

  • Daily sign-in at register required.
  • Personal belongings including coats, purses, briefcases, bound notebooks, parcels, envelopes, computer cases, etc., are not allowed in the reading room. Archives and Special Collections will provide pencils and paper for those lacking them.
  • Only pencils and laptop computers (without cases) allowed at reading room desks.
  • Materials must not be marked with Post-It notes, defaced, leaned on, altered, folded or traced on. They are not to be placed in the lap or propped against the side of the table.
  • Use of gloves is required when using photographs.
  • Generally no more than 10 volumes or 6 boxes or 2 cartons will be made available at a time.
  • Do not rearrange material in folders. If an item seems out of place, please alert a staff member.
  • Use the acid-free paper strips provided by the dept. to mark items for photocopying – do not remove items from folders.
  • When you are finished with material, leave it on the reading room table.

The Geraldine McAlpin Webster Reading Room is open Monday-Thursday, 9:30-12:00 PM and 1:00-4:00 PM Eastern Time except on University holidays. See our website for hours and directions.
