The primary clientele of the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library are the students, educators, researchers, and clinicians of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Services and resources are also extended to a few other groups, as described below.
Access to the Library
All CUIMC and affiliated user groups listed below are welcome in the Library during listed study spaces hours. Outside study spaces hours, only individuals with active CUIMC IDs have swipe-card access to the Knowledge Center.
The Library is located in the Hammer Health Sciences Center. Access to this building is governed by university-issued ID cards and administered by the Public Safety department.
The Library does not issue library cards or offer other privileges for purchase. Any privileges purchased through the Columbia University Library Information Office (LIO) at the Morningside campus' Butler Library do not extend to the Health Sciences Library.
Those seeking to perform historical research should contact the Library’s Archives and Special Collections department.

CUIMC full- and part-time students, officers, and full-time staff
Privileges include:
- 24/7 swipe-card access to the Knowledge Center
- Off-campus access of electronic resources
- Borrowing of materials from Columbia University Libraries and partner institutions
- Use of course reserves materials
- Interlibrary loan requests
NewYork-Presbyterian/CUIMC full-time staff
Privileges include access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours.
Upon registration at the Health Sciences Library for a borrowing account, NewYork-Presbyterian/CUIMC full-time staff can also establish these additional privileges:
- Borrowing of Columbia University Libraries materials
- Library staff-mediated interlibrary loan requests
New York State Psychiatric Institute full-time staff
Privileges include access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours.
Upon registration at the Health Sciences Library for a borrowing account, New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) full-time staff can also establish these additional privileges:
- Borrowing of Columbia University Libraries materials
- Please note: Interlibrary loan requests should be directed to the appropriate organization within the New York State system.
Columbia University (Morningside campus) full- and part-time students and officers and full-time staff
Columbia University (Morningside campus, including Barnard College and Teachers College) full- and part-time students and officers and full-time staff have privileges established by the Morningside campus Libraries. In addition to those privileges, this group has the following privileges at the Health Sciences Library:
- Access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours
- Off-campus access of electronic resources supplied by the Health Sciences Library
- Borrowing of Columbia University Libraries materials, including those housed at the Health Sciences Library
CUIMC part-time staff
Privileges are limited to access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours.
CUIMC and Columbia University alumni
Both CUIMC and Columbia University (Morningside campus) alumni must obtain an alumni card from the Library Information Office at the Butler Library. Those alumni with a valid ID have privileges established by the Morningside campus libraries.
In addition to those privileges, alumni have access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours,
CUIMC and Columbia University retirees
Both CUIMC and Columbia University (Morningside campus) staff who retire and have been employed ten or more years are entitled to a continuation of their library privileges. The retiree role is created by Human Resources; see their page on continued association for more information.
Once established, retirees have privileges established by the Morningside campus Libraries. In addition to those privileges, retirees have access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours.
Spouses and domestic partners of CUIMC and Columbia University students or faculty
Both CUIMC and Columbia University (Morningside campus) students and faculty may register a spouse or domestic partner with the Columbia University Morningside campus Library Information Office at the Butler Library. Once the ID card has been created, please fill out the Partner Access Form to request access to the Health Sciences Library in the Hammer Building.
Once established, spouses or domestic partners have privileges established by the Morningside campus Libraries. In addition to those privileges, spouses or domestic partners have access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours.
Visiting scholars
Visiting scholars are named at the recommendation of a Dean or Chairperson and with the approval of the Provost. Visiting scholars have access to the Knowledge Center during study spaces hours.
METRO member library affiliates
Columbia University Libraries is a participant of the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO). Member libraries can provide their users with a referral card to access material not available at their home institution. The Health Sciences Library only honors the item referral (also known as a yellow card), which permits the holder to consult a specific item and is valid for one day only.
Arrangements must be made at least seven (7) business days prior to the visit by emailing the Health Sciences Library at hs-library@columbia.edu.
Children of CUIMC full- and part-time students and officers and full-time staff
Members of the CUIMC community who wish to bring their children to the Health Sciences Library may do so during study spaces hours. Children must be supervised at all times by a parent and not be disruptive to other Library users.
