Several library resources allow users to earn continuing medical education (CME) credits for various activities, including simply searching the databases. In this article you'll learn how to get CME through each of the following resources.
AccessMedicine
First, create a free account to track potential credits. After logging in, click on your profile name in the upper righthand corner to open a dropdown menu that contains a “My CME” option. The “My CME” page lists eligible credits, in-progress credits, and earned credits.
There are several ways to earn credits:
- Generate quizzes (must score at least 80% to get CME credit)
- Read select textbooks (see PDF on how to claim this credit)
- Review cases
For more information, see AccessMedicine’s page “About CME.”
Point-of-Care Tools
ClinicalKey, DynaMed, and UpToDate all allow claims of 0.5 American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA) Category 1 Credits for structured online searching. Each tool requires the creation of a free personal account to track and claim the credits. See helpful guides for each resource below:
- ClinicalKey: Use this guide to claim credit for any conducted searches.
- DynaMed: Read more about claiming CMEs through DynaMed.
- UpToDate: Learn how to track CME credits.
MedPix
MedPix contains medical images, teaching cases, and clinical topics. The National Library of Medicine runs this free open-access database. They provide a useful PDF guide to learn how to complete cases for CMEs. A free personal account must be created to use this service.
Read by QxMD
Earn CME credits by reading articles on the Read by QxMD app. (This feature only works via the mobile app, not on the web version.) Learn how to set up the app to claim and submit CME credits using this guide. New users will find the article “Installing, configuring, and using Read by QxMD” useful.
If you frequently use a resource that you don't see listed above, try searching to see if they offer a way to earn CME credits.
